As my friend Laura mentioned on Twitter, “Brooks’ column on Sotomayor is sympathetic, heartbreaking, profound on the sacrifices of the uber-successful”. Not only has the hearing brought the word empathy back into play but it also brings genuinely thoughtful responses out of commentators. I don’t recall seeing that effect within the standard party rhetoric and doom-saying around confirmation hearings.
